BANKS AND BANKING HOURS IN VIETNAM

The banking hours in Vietnam differ from bank to bank.  However, normal banking hours in Vietnam open Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m to 11:30 pm and from 1:00 pm to 4:00pm and on Saturday from 8:00 am and 11:30 am.  There are few major banks in the urban areas will remain open until lunch hours and on Saturday and Sunday.  On public holidays, banks are closed.  Below are lists of some banks in Vietnam wherein you can have money exchange or other related banking transactions.

  1. State Bank of Vietnam- it is the central bank in Vietnam, which is a ministry level body under the government administration. One of the principal roles of the State Bank of Vietnam is to manage every commercial bank’s activities in Vietnam.

  1. Vietcombank- this prestigious bank is the oldest commercial bank in Vietnam.  With their motto “Always for Customer’s success” they want to maintain as the leading commercial bank in Vietnam and be an international bank in the next decade. It is also known as Bank for Foreign Trade of Vietnam.

  1. Indovina Bank- it was established on November 21, 1990 and becomes Vietnam’s first joint venture bank.  Industrial and Commercial Bank of Vietnam (ICBV) and Cathay United Bank are Indovina’s joint venture partners.

  1. Vietnam Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development- or simply known as AGRIBANK.  It was established in 1988 that has banking relationships with 702 correspondent banks in more than 90 countries all over the world.

  1. Industrial and Commercial Bank of Vietnam- it is one of the largest state owned banks in Vietnam.  When it separated with the State Bank of Vietnam, Incombank was established in 1988.

  1. VID Public Bank- it is the result of the joint venture between the Bank and Public Bank Berhad.  On May 1992, it started its operations in Hanoi and to date it expanded its branches to all major cities in Vietnam.

Vietnam EXIMBANK- it is also called as Vietnam Export- Import Commercial Joint Stock Bank.  Under the decision no 140/ CT, which was signed by Chairman of the Councils of Ministers Vietnam EXIMBANK was established on May 24, 1989.  In addition, it is one of the first-joint stock commercial banks in the country.

CREDIT CARDS ACCEPTED IN VIETNAM

If you are run out of cash you whilst traveling to the different beautiful places in Vietnam and all you have is a credit card.  Do not worry credit cards are accepted in top level and numerous mid level hotels, restaurants, shopping malls and travel agencies. 
These are the following credit cards that are widely accepted in Vietnam particularly in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City:

VISA- it is one of the most popular debit-credit cards throughout the world.  It was founded in 1958 by Dee Hock and with a hub in San Francisco, California. 

AMERICAN EXPRESS- it is sometimes called as AmEx.  American Express is best known for its credit card, charge card and traveler’s cheque businesses.  It was founded on 1980 in Buffalo, New York.  American Express Company’s slogan is “Do More”, which is to provide more quality services and benefits to its clients.

JCB- is an abbreviated form of Japan Credit Bureau.  Founded in 196, with a company based in Tokyo, Japan.  Now, JCB credit cards are issued in over 20 different countries throughout the world. 

MASTERCARD- it is number 2 payment system in the U.S.  It provides services in more than 210 territories and is accepted at more than 23 million places around the world.  Furthermore, MasterCard is a multinational corporation based in Purchase, NY in the United States.

However, it is a good thing to have cash in your pocket because sometimes there are extra taxes added as they swap on your credit card - these can amount to an additional 5 percent. Outside the major cities in Vietnam, you will have to rely on cash and travelers' cheque.
